Right then we did not realise the significance of his words but in the very next chapter when Harry goes through Snape's memories in the Pensieve, he comes to know how much Snape loved Lily. Even in his last moments, he wanted to look at Harry's green almond-shaped eyes, and remember the one woman he loved more than himself.
