Miguel, a music-loving boy in Mexico, has the misfortune to be born into a family that forbids all music because of an ancestor who abandoned his family for music. When Miguel steals a famous guitar, he's accidentally transported to the colourful afterlife, where he has to get home before he's stuck there for good.
