One of Gervais's more controversial series, Derek was first bought to life by the comedian at the 2001 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Ten years later, it was adapted for TV in the same mockumentary style as The Office, with Gervais in the lead as Derek — a nerdy, clumsy misfit who is completely and utterly devoted to his job as a retirement village volunteer.
