This drama is based on the Stephen King novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, which tells the story of a banker (played by Tim Robbins) who's sentenced to life in Shawshank State Penitentiary for killing his wife and his lover — even though he claims that he's innocent. Over time, he befriends a fellow prisoner and contraband smuggler (played by Morgan Freeman), and he ends up entangling himself in a money-laundering operation led by the prison warden.
