Following in the footsteps of the "penny-dreadfuls" of the 19th century, otherwise known as sensationalized British publications, Penny Dreadful focuses on public domain characters like the Creature from Frankenstein and Dorian Gray from The Picture of Dorian Gray. When Sir Malcolm Murray's (Timothy Dalton) daughter finds herself swept up in the underworld of Victorian London, he teams up with Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) and Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) to bring her back. Along the way, they face vampires and other monsters, proving the task may be more difficult than expected. There are three seasons on Netflix, with a spinoff called Penny Dreadful: City of Angels currently airing on Showtime.
