Wings of Ebony by J. Elle

At the centre of Wings of Ebony by J. Elle is a fearless heroine, a half-god, half-human girl named Rue whose life spirals downward when her mother is shot to death on her own doorstep. Soon afterward, Rue is whisked away to Ghizon, a hidden island of magic wielders, and is forced to leave behind her little sister and her familiar Houston neighbourhood. When Rue breaks Ghizon's sacred rule and returns to home on the anniversary of her mother's death, she learns of the violent reality that the Black locals like her sister are facing. To save her sister from the same forces that claimed her mother's life, Rue must wield the full magnitude of her supernatural powers.
