TV Shows Like Fleabag

8 Shows to Watch If You're Still Missing Fleabag

If you're still missing Fleabag, you're not alone. When I heard that another season of the breakout hit by Phoebe Waller-Bridge was highly unlikely, I spent hours (and hours) trying to look for a new TV show to fill the Fleabag-size hole in my heart.

But shows like Fleabag don't come around often. My favourite dark comedy is, quite frankly, irreplaceable, and if you missed out on tickets to see Fleabag at the theatre (also like me), I can assure you that I'm feeling way more depressed about it than you are.

From the Phoebe Waller-Bridge as Fleabag and Andrew Scott as the sexy priest to Olivia Coleman as the passive aggressive stepmother and Sian Clifford as Type A Clare (Fleabag's older sister), there's a lot to love about the hilarious BBC series that follows a flawed 30-something woman coming to grips with the death of her best friend, while living in London.

Though no show can compare, the good news is Waller-Bridge is currently writing a new movie, as well as adding a touch of her own magic to the new James Bond film. While you'll have to wait to hear more details, I strongly suggest you check out the eight TV shows ahead to try and fill the void.

1. Crashing

Before Fleabag, Phoebe Waller-Bridge wrote and starred in Crashing, a comedy about a group of six 20-somethings living in a disused hospital in London. Just the right amount of quirky, Phoebe is fabulous in the role of Lulu, who shows up at the flat share to surprise her childhood best friend — recently engaged Anthony. While it may sound like it's destined to be another love triangle drama, it's anything but. In true Fleabag style, it's original, multilayered, and a bundle of laughs.

2. Killing Eve

Any true Fleabag fan will know Phoebe Waller-Bridge is also the brains behind Killing Eve. Based on the novellas by Luke Jennings and adapted by Waller-Bridge, the cat-and-mouse spy thriller series follows not one but two heroines: MI5 security officer Eve (Sandra Oh) and psychopath assassin, Villanelle (Jodie Comer). Its sharp humour, quick wit, and unpredictable plot will have you hooked.

3. Catastrophe

If you're a fan of Fleabag, you're guaranteed to fall in love with Catastrophe. Cocreated and starring Irish writer, producer, and actor Sharon Horgan and American comedian Rob Delaney, the series follows a couple who fall unexpectedly pregnant after a brief fling. The all too real comedy tackles issues such as death, addiction, and infidelity with humour and honesty and will have you laughing and/or crying when you least expect it.

4. After Life

After Life sees British funnyman Ricky Gervais turn to dark humour in this six-part sitcom about grief. Following the death of his wife to cancer, Tony (Ricky Gervais) has suicidal tendencies as he struggles to deal with the loss, losing the will to live. Rejecting the idea of death because he has to look after his dog, he decides to ignore his moral compass, which proves to be harder than he thinks. Much like Fleabag, After Life is brutally honest, portraying life's harder moments in a realistic yet hilarious way.

5. This Way Up

This Way Up is a clever comedy about Aine, an English-foreign-language teacher recovering from a nervous breakdown. Written by and starring comedian Aisling Bea, the series explores topics such as mental health, loneliness, and family relationships as Aine attempts to start her life over. The bond between Aine and her sister Shona (played by Sharon Horgan) is reminiscent of that of Clare and Fleabag, and its focus on sibling relationships is what will keep you coming back for more.

6. Please Like Me

Please Like Me is Australia's answer to Fleabag but with a completely different premise. Touching on topics such as abortion, depression, cancer, and STDs (to name a few), in a lighthearted, laid-back way, the series follows Josh, a millennial who realises he's gay after getting dumped by his girlfriend. Nowhere near as heavy as it sounds, Josh is as lovable as he is erratic, and you're bound to fall in love with him, his friends, and his family.

7. Game Face

Game Face is nothing like Fleabag, but if you're a Phoebe Waller-Bridge fan, you'll be able to appreciate its funny, flawed main character Marcella. Written by Roisin Conaty (who also plays Marcella), the 30-something aspiring actress deals with all sorts of silliness, like handling a crush on her driving instructor who she continues to hire despite having already passed her test. It's laugh-out-loud funny and perfect for a midweek postwork binge-watch.

8. Back to Life

In Back To Life, Miri Matteson moves into her parents' house after spending 18 years in prison where she was serving time for an unspeakable crime. Created by and starring Daisy Haggard, the female-led dark comedy focuses on the ex-convict's attempt to rebuild her life as she struggles to put her past behind her. Produced by Two Brothers Pictures (the same team who worked with Waller-Bridge on Fleabag), you'll want to watch this six-episode series in one sitting.
