As much as I would love a medicine cabinet full of fuss-free beauty products toting Helvetica-branded labels, I am a more-is-more kind of lady. My attempts at taking classy, minimalist #shelfies leave me looking like I'm auditioning for an episode of Hoarders: Beauty Edition.
Until last week, I thought I had resigned myself to a life full of over-the-top makeup packageing. Then POPSUGAR's senior beauty editor left a clear plastic bag full of humble-looking blushes, lipsticks, highlighters, and mascaras — all under $10 — on my desk. Now, I'm reevaluating things.
The inconspicuous bundle contained samples from Undone Beauty, a new brand that's available on Amazon. It's reminiscent of Brandless, a lifestyle line selling $3 beauty products that work just as well as items that cost three times as much. I only used the cruelty-free products for a weekend, but I'm already fending off friends who are trying to snatch the products from under my nose. Undone Beauty Light On Mascara
This squeezable Light On Mascara ($6) is basically Twiggy's lashes in a tube. The wand's small, swirly design somehow magically deposits a uniform amount of mascara on each of my lashes. The formula itself is made with reflective particles that give off a subtle, doe-eyed shimmer. Can deer be sexy? I'm not sure, but if they can, they look like I do wearing this eye-opening mascara.
Undone Beauty Lip Life
At first, the bright, pink lemonade colour of this Undone Beauty Lip Life ($4) turned me off. I prefer deeper-hued lipsticks, but I was a very brave girl and soldiered on. I'm glad I applied this sheer topcoat to my lips, as the glossy effect is extremely plumping. The conditioning feel of this jojoba and rosehip oil-infused formula doesn't just go away a few seconds after you smear it on. Plus, the applicator has a nubby tip that massages the stuff over your lips, which not only makes everything go on evenly, but also just feels really good.
Undone Beauty Lip to Cheek Palette
This Undone Beauty Lip to Cheek Palette ($5) has three layers. The top one is for colour, the second provides a "dewy finish," and the third is a sheer highlighting option. I have no patience when it comes to reading directions, so I just use the middle option for all my swiping needs. I wore this as lipstick to a family dinner, and my mom cried over how I'm "blossoming into quite the young woman." Truthfully, she does this often, but she did specifically mention she loved my lip colour, and ended up buying one for herself, so there's that.
Undone Beauty Warm Up Bronzer
The powders in this Undone Beauty Warm Up Bronzer ($6) deposit well on my cheekbones. Though I prefer a liquid bronzer, it's fairly easy for me to buff this streak-free colour onto my cheekbones. This Summer, I'm on a glitter-detox (gletox?), and I love how this lowkey luminiser gives off a natural-looking glow rather than middle school dance-worthy shine.
Undone Beauty Curator Eye Palette
I'm fascinated by the versatile colours in this Undone Beauty Curator Eye Palette ($10). There's everything from your standard champagnes and rose golds to more out-there options like fuschia, Fenty-esque gold, and deep green. I'm also really impressed by the payoff: though this palette is crazy-affordable, it's not cheap. There's little fallout, the pigment is pretty intense, and the colour stays all day — such as when it's 90 degrees and even your eyelids are sweating.
