Meet the First Black Woman Crowned Miss Universe Great Britain
Miss Universe Great Britain has been around since 1952, and for the first time in its 66-year history, a black woman was crowned as the winner of the pageant. Anguilla native Dee-Ann Kentish-Rogers made history and will move on to represent the British territory and the United Kingdom at the international Miss Universe competition in December.
"It has been a whirlwind two days since being crowned Miss Universe Great Britain 2018," Kentish-Rogers wrote on Instagram. "I am privileged to have been chosen from a concentration of talented, ambitious, beautiful and funny women! I am humbled and truly uplifted by those who are embracing my rewarding experience and success as their own."
Before diving into the pageant world, the 25-year-old beauty queen was also a competitive athlete who won a silver medal in the heptathlon in the Central American and Caribbean Games and a bronze medal in the CARIFTA games in 2014. Kentish-Rogers told Pageant News she would be also be making history in a different way.
"To my knowledge, I am the first dreadlocked woman to walk across a Miss Universe Great Britain stage, and that is absolutely most exciting to me," she said.
If Kentish-Rogers is right, she made history in more than one way and deserves multiple rounds of applause for it.
