Promise Sawyers Responds to Being Bullied About Natural Hair

A 10-Year-Old Girl Responded Brilliantly After Being Bullied For Wearing Her Natural Hair to School

A 10-year-old student from Nashville is going viral for her brilliant response to the classmates who bullied her for wearing her natural hair to school. Earlier this month, Promise Sawyers took to social media to share a short video of herself proudly sporting an Afro while addressing the nasty comments she fielded from other students about her hair.

"So, yesterday I went to school, and I wore my hair in an Afro like this, and a lot of people had a lot of mean things to say about it. So that made me feel some type of way," she started off before sharing the advice her mother gave her when she explained the incident to her. "I told my mom and she said, 'Don't forget who you are and whose you are!' And I said, 'OK.'"

Sawyers ended the video by offering up some sage advice for the viewers at home. "I'm going back to school, and I'm coming back bigger and better," she said. "Don't allow anyone to steal your joy, don't give them that much power. I am Promise Mi'Amor Sawyers." After being posted, the video quickly made its rounds on social media, as many users applauded Sawyers for remaining unfazed by what other people deem beautiful at such a young age and having the confidence to turn such a negative moment into a positive one in front of the world.

The video had such a huge impact that Sawyers was even invited to appear on The Kelly Clarkson Show last week, where she got a surprise visit (and a pep talk) from Tracee Ellis Ross. "I saw your video and I was so moved because your hair is an extension of your legacy, what you come from, your story, and everything that you are and your beauty," the Black-ish actress told her.
