And it breaks my heart to say that 90% of this violence is directed towards women & young girls. 51 cases are reported per day, though the majority of cases are NOT reported because to these girls violence is not only normal, but expected. Everything began to change when @unicefbrasil and @fcompaz began to EDUCATE young women. Violence in Recife has decreased by 35%. Education has literally saved the lives of MILLIONS of young girls. Last night, we danced together and we laughed and we smiled and we were changed for the rest of our lives. A post shared by Sofia Carson (@sofiacarson) on Jun 19, 2019 at 6:23am PDT Sofia Carson made a special trip to Recife, Brazil, this week as part of UNICEF's initiative to promote and support children's rights. The 26-year-old actress learned all about the organisation's efforts to protect kids from violence and help them acquire a proper education. During the visit, Sofia met with children at COMPAZ, a community centre that aims to help them stay off the streets by providing a safe space. The actress was even greeted with a dance performance from some of the kids before she joined in on the musical fun. Additionally, she stopped by the Altino Ventura Foundation — which gives clinical assistance and emergency services to low-income patients — and spoke with doctors, volunteers, and patients. The agency particularly specialises in treating children and their families who have been impacted by the Zika virus. "To say that I am honoured to be in Brazil with @unicefusa & @unicefbrasil witnessing their life altering relentless fight to end violence against children would be an understatement," Sofia captioned a heartfelt post about the trip. She then went on to share that young girls are especially subjected to violence in Recife but rarely report any cases, adding, "To these girls violence is not only normal, but expected." Sofia emphasised the importance of schooling to help those in need. "Education has literally saved the lives of MILLIONS of young girls," she wrote. "Last night, we danced together and we laughed and we smiled and we were changed for the rest of our lives."
