Listen to the Best New Music For September 2021 in the UK

All the Music We've Added to Our Playlists in September

After the return of music festivals and buzzy bank holiday weekends, we're ready to accept that summer is well and truly over, and the autumn season is about to begin. While we might not be getting back to total normality just yet (I miss you, office desk), we are continuing to find new ways to get through this bizarre year — with listening to great new music being one of them.

With so many songs set to be released this month (and this year, undoubtedly), it can be hard to keep track of who's doing what. Well, that's where we come in. Every month, we round up the best of the best tracks from the UK music scene. Whether it's another one of Joy Crookes's soothing anthems or a catchy R&B track from Mahalia, we've got the songs to see you through this new month.

Just a few days into September, we've devoured an intoxicating new record from Priya Ragu and a sweet new EP from songstress Hamzaa, with a brand-new album from Little Simz for us to devour. Read on to discover the tracks that made it onto our September playlists.

"Good Ones" is the latest release from queen of pop, Charli XCX. It's a fiery anthem about the concept of self-sabotage in relationships and unsurprisingly, the video seemingly takes place in a very bizarre location . . .

First debuted on Simz' Tiny Desk Concert, "Point and Kill" is one of the newer releases from the hard-hitting new album, Sometimes I Might Be Introvert. Featuring London-based Nigerian singer Obongjayar, (one of the only features on the album, might we add), the song has an undeniably impressive flow and seeks to promote Simz' desire to protect her loved ones, no matter what.

Jorja Smith and Sasha Keable together feels like a pairing that should've happened a long time ago. Thankfully, we finally have the duet we've always wanted, and it's hauntingly beautiful. "Killing Me" is an ultra-sombre ballad, with breathtaking vocals, and a video to match.

Hamzaa has been on a pretty significant journey this past year, and her comeback EP proves that and more. One of the new releases from the project is "Heaven", a self-assured anthem with soothing vocals and the sweetest melody.

It's been a while since we've heard from Manchester-based Bipolar Sunshine, so we're pleased to share his latest single, "Answers". It's a subtle yet upbeat dance track with synth-y vocals and an otherworldly video to match.

English singer-songwriter Connie Constance is back with a new single, "Kids Like Us", and it's the perfect end-of-summer anthem. Her signature wispy vocals are back in full force in this delicate indie ballad, and the repetitive video is oddly soothing.

South-African born Baby Queen returns with another one of her refreshingly honest tracks, "Narcissist". The pop-indie artist said that the single is "an admission of my own narcissistic tendencies, but also me trying to make sense of where those tendencies came from in the first place."

She added that "I think women are told from the moment they are born until they can form their own opinions that beauty and vanity are the key to their success, and then they are berated when they are older for being self-obsessed or apathetic. Cosmetic companies want us to hate ourselves. There is money being made of our obsession with improving ourselves and our appearances. This song is just saying, 'Yeah f you, I am a narcissist, and I am self-obsessed, but why do you think that is?'"

Little Mix have released their brand new single, "Love (Sweet Love)", and after the births of three pop-star babies, it feels like the perfect title. The single seemingly marks a different sound for the iconic girlband, with elements of 90's RnB, and possibly even some garage influences.

Headie One has been on a roll this last year, with releases like "Pound Signs" and "Ain't It Different" taking the charts by storm. His new single, "2 Chains", is all about Headie's journey so far and how he continues to rise above any negativity. Musically, the track features a powerful string-based production that acts as a tribute to the early days of Grime music.

Sigrid's comeback has probably been one of our favourites this year, and her new single "Burning Bridges" only confirms that. The track is an edgy pop record about needing a "clean break" from a relationship and acts as an important lesson in letting go.

We've been watching Griff pretty closely since she was announced as this year's BRIT rising star, and since then, we've not been disappointed. Her new single, "One Night", is a glittery dance anthem made up of Griff's signature sweet vocals — and the video that accompanies it features some seriously impressive outfits, so it's definitely worth a watch.

It's not been long since Joy Crookes announced an incredibly spontaneous show at London's Hackney Wick, and the new release that she performed is still very much stuck in our heads. "When You Were Mine" is the latest single from her upcoming album, Skin, and it's a breezy soul ballad about past lovers.

"Lockdown" is the latest release from Swiss-Tamil artist Priya Ragu. Released just after the news of her upcoming EP, the single is seemingly M.I.A inspired, with traditional Tamil-infused instruments. On the single, Ragu said that "I wrote this song earlier this year during a time where I felt isolated from the people I love most. It's about dealing with being alone in this situation and wanting to feel the energy of another persons presence."
