Joe Jonas on the Song He Wrote For "Devotion": "One of My Favourite Songs I've Ever Written"

Joe Jonas has a collaboration with Khalid titled "Not Alone" in the credits of his upcoming film "Devotion," and it's a particularly meaningful release for him. "I was asked to write the end-credits song for the film by our director, J.D. [Dillard], so I wrote it with Harv and Ryan Tedder, and I asked my good friend Khalid to join," he tells POPSUGAR. "Khalid came on and finished it up. It's a beautiful, tragic song about being away from those that you really care about and always being there for them if you can't physically be there for them."

Jonas can't wait for people to hear it. "It's spiritual — I'd say it's a little spiritual in some senses," he says. "I am really proud of the work we did, and I think it's one of my favourite songs I've ever written."

"Devotion," which is based on a true story, follows a "band of brothers who are part of the Korean War, also known as the forgotten war," Jonas says. "There are heroes involved, there's a love story, there's heartbreak. It's an emotional one." Jonas plays a supporting character named Marty Goode, while Glen Powell and Jonathan Majors star as US Navy pilots Tom Hudner and pioneering Black airman Jesse Brown.

Filming took place in "the midst of wave 12 of lockdown," Jonas says. "We found a window of time where we were able to get this thing done with hundreds of cast and crew, and we were all safe. So that is enough to be grateful for." He adds, "And even if I walk away with a handful of people seeing the film — which I don't think that's going to be the case, I will say — I made really good friends from it, and it was a learning experience that I will always treasure."

The film, which hits theatres on Nov. 23, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 12. Jonas attended the screening with his wife, Sophie Turner, marking their first red carpet appearance since the birth of their second daughter in July.

Jonas has plenty to be grateful for these days. In addition to his new movie, he just underwent Staar Surgical's Evo eye procedure, a newly FDA-approved eye surgery that changed his lifelong nearsightedness to 20/20 vision. He's also been working on new music with both of his bands, DNCE and the Jonas Brothers. "It's a work in progress," he says of balancing his work with family life and time for himself. "I'm no pro, but I'm getting a little bit better."
