Miley Cyrus Clarifies Why She Doesn't Want to Tour: "I I Just Don't Want to Sleep on a Moving Bus"
Miley Cyrus fans who have been dreaming of hearing "Flowers" live in a packed stadium were disappointed to learn the songstress has no intention of touring her new album, "Endless Summer Vacation," in an 18 May interview with British Vogue. But in a new statement posted to her Instagram, Cyrus may have taken back that sentiment a little bit.
The "Wrecking Ball" singer first shared that she currently has no plans to tour again anytime soon (or maybe even ever), telling British Vogue, "It's been a minute" in reference to touring. She continued, "After the last [headline arena] show I did [in 2014], I kind of looked at it as more of a question. And I can't. Not only 'can't,' because can't is your capability, but my desire. Do I want to live my life for anyone else's pleasure or fulfillment other than my own?"
Cyrus went on to add that she much prefers performing in intimate spaces, especially for her family and friends. For her, singing in front of a huge audience just isn't as satisfying. "Like singing for hundreds of thousands of people isn't really the thing that I love," she said. "There's no connection. There's no safety... It's so isolating because if you're in front of 100,000 people then you are alone."
Fast forward to 24 May: Cyrus posted on Instagram to get a few things straight about her previous comments. Mainly, she wanted fans to know she doesn't need to tour to feel connected to them. "For clarity I feel connected to my fans NOW more than ever," she wrote. "When I win, WE win. Even if I don't see them face to face every night at a concert, my fans are felt deeply in my heart. I'm constantly creating and innovating new ways that I can stay connected to the audience I love - without sacrificing my own essentials."
She then stressed that performing for fans will always be something she loves to do, even if it's not in stadiums ever again. "Performing for YOU has been some of the best days of my life & we will continue this journey together as we have for the last almost two decades," she continued. "This has nothing to do with a lack of appreciation for the fans & everything to do with I simply don't want to get ready in a locker room. Which is the reality of life on the road. These looks I've been turnin don't travel well. The archival looks don't fold. I just don't want to sleep on a moving bus."
Cyrus's decision may not even be a permanent one, though, as she concluded her post by writing, "It isn't what's best for me right NOW, & if you've been following my career you know that I always change and the way I feel about that could too. Love you forever, I'm just on my Endless Summer Vacation."
The last time Cyrus embarked on a world tour was in 2014 for her album "Bangerz." Since then, she's gone on to release some of the most critically acclaimed albums of her career so far, including 2020's "Plastic Hearts" and 2023's "Endless Summer Holiday." Despite not touring, the pop star has continued to find creative ways to deliver intimate performances of her music to fans.
Cyrus kicked off the year by hosting "Miley Cyrus's New Year's Eve Party 2022" in the US, in which she performed with the likes of Dolly Parton, Paris Hilton, and Sia. In March, she brought back her "Backyard Sessions" series with the Disney+ special, "Endless Summer Holiday (Backyard Sessions)," in which she performed stripped down versions of her latest hits like "Flowers."
