Nicki Minaj Releases "Super Freaky Girl" Single

Nicki Minaj Releases "Super Freaky Girl," Her First Solo Single in 3 Years

Nicki Minaj is releasing new solo music for the first time in three years with the arrival of her latest single. The rapper dropped her new track "Super Freaky Girl" on Aug. 12, which uses a sample of Rick James's "Super Freak" to pay homage to the 1981 hit. "He want a F-R-E-A-K (freaky girl) / F-R-E-A-K (freaky girl)," Nicki raps in the hook.

Nicki previously released singles like "We Go Up" featuring Fivio Foreign and "Do We Have a Problem?" with Lil Baby this year, but there's still no word on when her new album will arrive. However, the rapper did previously announce she'll soon air a six-part self-titled docuseries about her life and career, though the Bron Studios-produced project has not yet found a network home.

Nicki is set to return to the MTV Video Music Awards stage on Aug. 28, alongside other performers like Anitta, J Balvin, Panic! at the Disco, Marshmello, and Khalid. The 17-time nominee and five-time winner will also be honoured with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. "Nicki has broken barriers for women in hip-hop with her versatility and creative artistry," Bruce Gillmer — Paramount's president of music, music talent, programming, and events — said in a press release. "She has shifted the music industry and cemented her status as a global superstar with her crossover appeal, genre-defying style and continuing to be unapologetically 'Nicki.'"
