What do you call it when two Hollywood heartthrobs team up to maximise their appeal? You might call it "Strange Way of Life," a new short film from acclaimed Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar starring Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke. In the film, which will premiere at Cannes in May, Pascal and Hawke play two old friends (and lovers), both cowboys, who reunite to solve a murder. Sony Pictures Classics shared the first trailer for the short on 26 April. The trailer highlights an over-the-top film anchored by Pascal and Hawke's lead performances.

Pascal — who stars on "The Last of Us" and "The Mandalorian" — plays a gunslinger, while Hawke plays the local sheriff. In a 2022 interview with Indiewire, Almodóvar called it his "answer" to "Brokeback Mountain." The director also praised Pascal in an April 2023 interview with Esquire, saying, "I asked Pedro to play someone solid, emotional, crafty, a cheat if necessary, warmhearted. And he played all those nuances with incredible ease. He can be adorably sentimental and hard as nails. He's a great comic actor, and he can also be impenetrable if necessary."

Pascal also told Flaunt magazine in a February interview that it was "very easy" to act attracted to Hawke. "That's a dumb question! Think about staring into those steel f*cking blue eyes. Brown eyes are great! Chocolate chips! But, you know, that steel blue stare of his. Oh god, I don't mean to make 'Zoolander' references while talking about this film."

The film also features Spanish actors Manu Rios and Jason Fernández. It's not clear yet when audiences will get to see the full film, but we can't wait. Watch the trailer for the movie ahead.
