Jo experiences major changes in both her personal and professional life last season. She eventually confronts her abusive estranged husband Paul, who later ends up brain dead following an unprecedented fit of rage. While figuring out where she should go after her residency, she proposes to Alex. Though her wedding ceremony goes awry, Jo marries Alex with Meredith officiating their wedding.
In terms of her professional affairs, Jo, now chief resident, must choose between different career opportunities, including a general surgery attending position at Grey Sloan and a minimally invasive surgery fellowship at MassGen.
