One of the best references to the original film has to be Dick Van Dyke's cameo at the end of the movie. In the first film, he played the bank director Mr. Dawes, and in Mary Poppins Returns he plays his son, Mr. Dawes Jr. It's hard not to get a little choked up when the actor starts dancing and singing along to "Trip a Little Light Fantastic (Reprise)."
