"Brown Girls" by Daphne Palasi Andreades

Daphne Palasi Andreades's debut novel "Brown Girls" is the emotional, complex story of young women supporting each other as they come of age and figure out who they are and who they want to be. Nadira, Gabby, Naz, Trish, and Angelique are children of immigrants who constantly feel like they're being pulled between two worlds. As they grow up together in Queens, they each take different paths to discover where they belong. At times, it stretches their friendships to the breaking point, with all four doing their best to handle the joys and heartbreaks of growing up and, sometimes, growing apart.
