Don't Pick Up the Phone — Netflix's New Fear Street Trailer Is an Homage to Horror Classics

Open up the brochure for the small fictional town of Shadyside, Ohio, aka "Killer Capital, USA," and you might see photos of shadows lurking in unexpected places, newspaper clippings recounting gruesome murders, or even a cryptic note from the masked killers themselves lingering nearby. In the official trailer for Netflix's Fear Street film trilogy, wrong numbers are no accident, and friendly rivalries turn deadly when 300-year-old supernatural forces take over.

Based on R.L. Stine's 1989 book series of the same name, the movies tell the story of a group of teens who set out to solve a series of murder mysteries caused by paranormal entities linked to their town's dark past. Like a mashup of Friday the 13th, Scream, Nightmare on Elm Street, and all of our favourite horror movie classics, the trailer pans across puddles of blood, demogorgon-like creatures, and even the silhouette of a mysterious figure holding an ax. "It's Shadyside. We're all cursed," Sadie Sink's character says before she's snatched up from her hiding place by a snake-like beast.

"The thing that ties Fear Street to people all over the world is that we all have the same fears."

"As a filmmaker making Fear Street, but also just as a movie lover, I was so excited to pay homage to some of the great eras of horror movies," said director Leigh Janiak. "For 1994, Scream stood above all rest — it's peak '90s horror and, I think, one of the most brilliant movies ever made, period. Then for 1978, I got to look at the heyday of slasher films — Friday the 13th, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street. For 1666 . . . I found the best inspiration for me lay in the beautiful world made rotten of Terence Malick's The New World."

Plagued by their town's dark past, the teens of Shadyside put their own horror movie knowledge to the test in an attempt to put an end to the 300-years-worth of horrific murders once and for all. "The thing that ties Fear Street to people all over the world is that we all have the same fears," Stine said in a press release. "It doesn't matter what country you're in, everyone is afraid of the dark, or afraid somebody's lurking in the closet, or afraid of being in some strange new place they've never been before. We all have the same fears."

Fear Street Part 1: 1994 debuts on Netflix on 2 July, 2021, followed by Fear Street Part 2: 1978 on July 9, 2021 and Fear Street Part 3: 1666 on 16 July, 2021. Watch the official trailer for the slasher marathon here, and beware: you're in for a scare.
