Frozen 2 Heads Into the Unknown — So Will There Be a Third Frozen Movie?

As Frozen 2 makes its debut, fans are already wondering if there will be a third Frozen movie, or if this will be the last time we see Elsa, Anna, Olaf, Kristoff, and Sven. While nothing is ever for certain, the Frozen creative team seems ready to take a break, so there's a very real possibility that there will not be a third instalment.

"For me, finishing [Frozen 2] felt final," director and cowriter Jennifer Lee told Yahoo Movies UK. "But we always say 'never say never.' I think what made this one special is that we'd both confessed that we didn't want to leave this world. We naively just went into this because we love [the characters] and we could see more story." Lee has recently taken on a new role at Disney as chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, so even if there does end up being a third Frozen, Lee would be unlikely to personally return.

Star Idina Menzel, who voices Elsa, had a different answer when asked, in the same interview, if this would be the last Frozen:

"You're going to make me cry! I didn't think about it. I think about it being the last session with the creative team who are my Disney family for this particular film, and thinking, 'Oh my God, it's been three years [in production],' and it's bittersweet, you know? It feels good to complete something and accomplish this project with them, and also knowing that we won't see each other for a little while, so there's definitely that. But the finality of it, I haven't dealt with yet."

Even so, the creative team isn't completely shutting down all possibility of a return trip to Arendelle in the future. After all, it's one of Disney's most beloved — and lucrative — modern brands.

"I mean, nothing ever closes the door," co-director and writer Chris Buck told Insider. "As we say in our lives, 'never say never.' But for us that's what got us figuring out what the story [of Frozen 2] would be a few years ago. What if we could tell one complete story? A lot of things in Frozen 2 answer some of the questions in Frozen, or questions you didn't know about." As the creators explain, they intend these two movies to tell one complete story, without cliffhangers or loose ends designed to lead into a third movie.

But as we learned before, love is an open door, and there's definitely enough Frozen love to maybe keep the door for another sequel open in the future!
