Elle Fanning's Purple Vivienne Westwood Corset Dress

Elle Fanning Becomes a Modern Day Catherine the Great in This Liquid Metallic Corset

Elle Fanning was recognised for her role as Catherine the Great in Hulu's The Great at the 2021 Independent Spirit Awards, nominated for best female performance in a scripted series. The actress and fashion queen, who is well-versed in the trends her 18th century character dabbled in, accepted Vivienne Westwood's request to make an inspired dress for the occasion. The result was this corseted, purple metallic midi, liquid-like and dripping in pearls.

Fanning's stylist, Samantha McMillen, noted the significance behind the details: "It was the brilliant idea of Vivienne and Andreas [of Vivienne Westwood] to incorporate pearls to commemorate Catherine the Great's love of pearls." Naturally, the corset silhouette looked quite similar to the ones Elle wore on set, one of which she even used to tease season two with Catherine the Great's pregnancy announcement back in February.

While we await the return of our new favourite show (which will likely stream sometime in 2021), read on to admire the Vivienne Westwood team's impeccable work and the finishing touch on the ensemble: a pair of gold Christian Louboutin pumps. Elle definitely looks like a modern, albeit edgier Catherine, and photographer Gareth Gatrell was sure to capture the memorable moment from every angle.
