The clasping hands belt buckle was first made popular by famed Italian fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli, who was heavily influenced by the surrealist art movement. Her Autumn/Winter 1934 collection featured miniature hands as belt buckles, bag closures, and buttons of coats, cloaks, and jackets.
