Dietitian's Body Positive Quotes

Finally! An Expert Is Telling Me to Eat the Dang Doughnut

I'm all about anything that encourages listening to and loving my body, so when I discovered registered dietitian Colleen Christensen, RD and her Instagram account that's exploding with body positivity and posts about intuitive eating, I literally teared up.

Lately she's been posting quotes like these and she told POPSUGAR, "My goal is to help every woman (and man!) have a healthy relationship with food and feel comfortable and confident in their own bodies — no matter what size or shape that may be! Life is too short to be worrying about the calories in a cupcake or the size of your thighs! Loving and respecting your body, while also enjoying the deliciousness of life, is where it's at!"

If this sounds like a way of life you can get behind, keep scrolling to see the other inspiring quotes she's posted to help people find freedom from food obsession.

Colleen writes in the caption: "Fitbits can be a great reminder to move your body in a way that makes you feel amazing! But, sometimes this gentle reminder can turn it a straight up obsession! It did for me. I used the calorie burn displayed across my wrist as the marker for how much I could eat in a day for a solid four years . . . Taking the Fitbit off was something I had thought of doing — I knew I needed to in order to truly find freedom with food . . . After a while I no longer based my food choices off of a number, I was able to listen to my body. I felt so confident, relaxed, and way more nourished since I was actually listening to my body NOT a bracelet!"

Dropping the rules she had imposed on herself helped her listen to her body; she writes, "After committing to remove my food rules one by one, dedicating time to re-awaken my hunger cues, and allowing myself to feel the joy that eating can provide, I enjoy our weekly pizza night with zero anxiety or meticulous workout planning beforehand."

We completely agree with Colleen on this: "Snacking is a great way to ward off hanger, keep your body energized, and, let's be honest, is plain delish."

Colleen shares in the caption, "Getting in a good sweat is a great way to give yourself a feel-good mood boost, and learning to eat intuitively can actually help improve your workout performance!"

"Three years ago I would have been obsessively thinking about tacos because I didn't allow myself to eat them," Colleen explains in the caption. "And when you tell yourself you can't have something you want it even! This frustrated me and took up so much mental space . . . I thought 'I literally don't have time for this!' The obsessive food thoughts have to end. So, I wrote out all of my food rules that were causing me to obsess and worked through them one by one, until they were all gone. When my food rules were gone so were the obsessive thoughts!"

We love a pun, but in this caption Colleen also gets deep. She writes, "I love humour (obvi) but let's get serious for a second. Have you ever hated your body? It's a strong word, I know, but I can say that I have. Six years I nitpicked every square inch of my body and saw every ounce of fat that I could pinch as bad.

I remember one specific day while I was still in college, on my way to becoming a dietitian, one of the dietitians I was an intern for pulled me into her office and asked me if everything was okay. She could see how consumed I was with food and my body. I lied through my teeth and said 'yeah, of course.' She then said something that stuck with me to this day 'If you get hit by a car, your body won't have any energy reserves to pull from." I was in shock, because she was right.

I'd never thought of having fat as a good thing until those words came out of her mouth. I mean, society has told us it is so bad. But, from that day on I began to respect the fat on my body; it's energy!"

She write in the caption, "Carbs are, like, muy importante. Yes, they're delicious, but beyond that your body actually need them. Carbs are your body's — and brain's — preferred energy source!"

Make the fish face or don't make the fish face, but don't let your scale own you. Colleen explains, "The scale is such a simple looking tool, but can destroy your self-confidence and mood."
