Chris Hemsworth's Functional Upper-Body Workout

Chris Hemsworth Says This Upper-Body Workout Will "Set Your Arms on Fire"

Chris Hemsworth shares quite a few workouts on his Instagram and via his fitness app, Centr, and we've just so happened to notice that no matter what muscles he's working, his upper body always looks ripped. Of course, it's no surprise that the guy who got famous for playing a superhero with an impossibly heavy hammer always makes sure his arms, shoulders, and back are in incredible shape. But on March 19, Hemsworth gave his followers a taste of what goes into the makings of his upper body, and — again, no surprise here — the workout looks seriously difficult.

Dubbed a "functional challenger," this routine consists of just five moves using a battle rope, a medicine ball, and a pair of dumbbells. The moves are:

  • Battle rope: 40 reps
  • Medicine ball slam: 10 reps
  • Triceps push-up on medicine ball: 10 reps
  • Reverse lunge with dumbbell curl: 10 reps
  • Sit-through: 10 reps each side

Follow up the circuit with a one-minute rest. You can repeat the circuit for up to ten rounds, but if you're new to this intensity of training, we recommend aiming for just three to five rounds to start. Make sure to use a comfortable weight for the dumbbells and medicine ball and know that you can always modify the moves if necessary. (Try regular or knees-down tricep push-ups, for example, or do reverse lunges with a bodyweight bicep curl to start.)

This upper-body routine is simple but undeniably tough. In fact, Hemsworth's caption promises the workout will "set your arms on fire." That's high praise, considering it's coming from Thor himself. Check out the video above, grab your equipment, and try it out for a fast-paced, functional challenge!
