Ireen Wüst Sets An Olympic Record, Claims Sixth Gold Medal
The Most Decorated Speed Skater of All Time Sets An Olympic Record
Dutch speed skater, Ireen Wüst, won gold in the women's speed skating 1500m — as she dashed across the finish line with a time of 1:53.28. The 35-year-old's gold medal win set an Olympic record 0.23 seconds faster than, now retired, Dutch speed skater Jorien ter Mors's 2014 record time. Miho Takagi of Japan, who still holds the 1:49.83 world record for the sport, clutched the silver medal at the Winter Games with a time of 1:53.72. On Monday, Wüst also became the first individual to secure a gold medal at five Winter Olympic Games with her women's speed skating 1500m win. Her previous Olympic gold medal wins include 2018 Pyeongchang (1500m), 2014 Sochi (Team Pursuit and 3000m), 2010 Vancouver (1500m), and 2006 Torino (3000m).
This 2022 Beijing Games gold medal also marked a total of 12 Olympic medals for Wüst. "The most decorated speed skater of all time looking for one more piece of hardware. And, Ireen Wüst sets an Olympic record to take the lead," an NBC announcer says as Wüst skates across the finish. Witness her history-making Olympic win, below.
