Nathan Chen Wins His 4th US Figure Skating Championship

Nathan Chen Just Won His 4th National Title, Joining the Ranks of Figure Skating Legends

American figure skater Nathan Chen has been undefeated since he finished just off the podium at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, a winning streak that now includes four consecutive gold medals at the US Figure Skating Championships. It's a feat no man has accomplished since skating legend Brian Boitano claimed his fourth national title in 1988.

Nathan's victory was all but assured coming into the competition, since he has an enormous technical advantage over his competitors, but he certainly didn't take things easy. His Rocketman-themed free skate included four quad jumps — the most difficult element in the sport — as well as a triple axel. If that weren't impressive enough, the program also featured a hip-hop-styled step sequence to "Bennie and the Jets" that had the crowd roaring. Though it wasn't his cleanest skate (Nathan has been battling back from the flu), it still brought in an astounding 216.04 points. Combined with his short program, he scored a total of 330.17 across the whole competition.

With this victory, Nathan secured his status as one of the greatest American skaters of all time, joining the ranks of legends such as Boitano, Scott Hamilton, and Todd Eldredge, who won four national championships, consecutive or not. Watch his near-flawless short program above!
