Megan Rapinoe, 33, currently plays for and captains Reign in the NSWL, and she has been a member of the USWNT since she made her debut in 2006. However, due to two separate ACL injuries, Rapinoe did not play for the senior team in 2007 and 2008 and unfortunately missed the 2007 Women's World Cup as a result. Since then, she has earned 153 caps and played in the 2011 and 2015 World Cup tournaments, so this year will mark her third World Cup appearance.
Rapinoe wore the captain's armband for the first time in 2018, in the team's first game of World Cup qualifying. "I think it has become very obvious that I'm a leader on this team and willing to shoulder things for the team and speak up for things and have a capacity off the field to have a lot on my plate," she has said. Given how long she has been a member of the team (and how outspoken she is when it comes to what she believes in), the choice makes perfect sense to us.
