Ruggable Shag Rug Review

For the past six months or so, I've had "buy a new office rug" at the top of my to-do list. I've been reorganising my office space ever since I started working from home, and now that I'm all set with office furniture, I knew it was time to move on to other areas of the space. I have a large jute rug in my office, and on top of it sits one of the least aesthetically pleasing rugs I've ever owned. The rug's blue floral pattern is no longer my style, and it also sheds an insane amount even though it isn't a high pile rug. Plus, it's thin and uncomfortable. I occasionally like to work out on the rug in my office, and I always have to layer a towel over a yoga mat because the rug has no cushion.

When considering a replacement rug, I knew I wanted something that was aesthetically pleasing, didn't shed a bunch, and was also comfortable and plush, and Ruggable offers just that. I had originally heard about the brand from friends who were enamoured with it, but it wasn't until I heard they were coming out with shag rugs that I knew I had to get my hands on one.

If you're new to Ruggable, let me explain what makes the brand so amazing. Its patented Rug System comes in two pieces: a nonslip rug pad as well as a lightweight rug cover. The rug cover is both water-resistant and stain-resistant, and it's designed to easily fit in a washing machine — which makes keeping it clean a piece of cake. The back of its rug covers are outfitted with a soft fabric that is designed to cling to the rug pad. The top of the rug pad has a clingy hook texture, as well as Velcro on all four corners, and the bottom of the rug pads are made of a nonslip grippy rubber.

I opted for Ruggable's Egret White 6x9 Shag Rug with Cushioned Pad ($749), because we have white oak floors in our house, and I thought the colour would match the best. This is from the brand's newest shag collection, which comes in sizes ranging from two by three to six by nine foot choices. You can also choose it in four different colours: white, ivory, grey, and a pretty soft pink.

We have white rugs throughout our house in a few different places, but we've owned them for over five years, and they are definitely starting to look dingy. Despite the downsides, there's nothing I love more than a crisp white rug. The neutral colour goes with just about everything, and it will always be my pick if given the choice.

As for the rug pad, buyers have an option between a Classic Pad or a Cushioned Pad — I opted for the cushioned pad because I love sitting on the floor when I'm reading or working, and having the extra cushion is always nice.

The rug and rug pad arrived rolled up in a big cardboard box, but it was still surprisingly lightweight. Since it needed to be carried up two flights of stairs to reach my office, I quickly enlisted my boyfriend to be my hired muscle and help me get it set up. My boyfriend didn't have any issue carrying it, and we set to work setting it up.

Following the directions on the Ruggable website, after taking both pieces out of the box and unrolling them, we rolled the rug cover back up again, shag side in. We then folded it in half and set it aside. After, we unrolled the rug pad and positioned it exactly where we wanted it. Next, we brought over the rug cover and aligned the rug cover over the rug pad, allowing roughly a one-inch section of the rug to hang over each side. Then, we unrolled the rug cover and made sure it was securely adhered to the rug pad by smoothing it down with our hands. The entire process was simple and took us fewer than 15 minutes, including carrying it up the stairs. Because the rug cover is so lightweight, it was much easier to align with the rug pad than a traditional rug, which is heavier, clunky, and difficult to maneuver.

The rug cover was so soft and comfortable — I spent probably a full 10 minutes just sliding my feet over its super plush texture.

Once we had the rug laid out and completely situated, I couldn't resist walking over it with my bare feet. The rug cover was so soft and comfortable — I spent probably a full 10 minutes just sliding my feet over its super plush texture. Not to mention, it's even more comfortable to sit or lay on. The cushioned pad really pulls its weight, and I've had many a workout session — sans yoga mat — on my new rug.

With a lot of new rugs I've purchased, I've had to air them out because they have a funky chemical smell to them, but I didn't have that issue with this one. Not only was it easy to install, but it was ready to use immediately — no waiting time necessary.

Although I haven't yet spilled anything on my new white rug, I'm sure it's only a matter of time before I do. I love that I have the option to quickly roll my rug up and throw it into my washing machine. Plus, I no longer have to worry about my white rug getting dingy over time because I can always freshen its look with a simple wash!

All in all, I'm beyond impressed with the Ruggable system. Both the rug and rug pad are of amazing quality, and the entire installation process was quick, easy, and completely headache-free. I will definitely be purchasing any future rugs from the brand. If you've been curious about the brand and interested in purchasing a rug, let me just say: I can't recommend them enough.
