Character in Foster Care on Sesame Street

Meet Karli, the New Sesame Street Character Who's in Foster Care

There's a brand-new character in town, and your kids are gonna love her. Sesame Street just introduced a new muppet named Karli, who happens to be in foster care and is currently living with her "for-now" parents, Dalia and Clem. In an effort to give parents and educators resources to help talk about tough issues — like homelessness and being in foster care — the "Sesame Street in Communities" program made it a point to feature a muppet who shares this experience.

"Children in foster care often experience many transitions — from their separation from birth parents, to their placement in foster care, to many moves — and the new resources are designed to help children in crisis cope along the way," said a press release. "The initiative is part of the 'Sesame Street in Communities' program, which provides free, easy-to-use resources for community providers and caregivers on a range of topics, including tough issues like family homelessness and traumatic experiences."
