Has hypochlorous acid been popping up on your TikTok For You page? Tired of hearing the hype around the Tower 28 SOS Spray and want to get involved, but don't know how? Well, you've come to the right place.

Hypochlorous acid sprays are quickly becoming a cult product, as more and more TikTok creators have shared their love for the skin sprays, with their videos garnering over 50k views. Hypochlorous acid is having its moment in the States, and as the skincare trend crosses the pond, curiosity is increasing — so we asked the pros what the acid is all about.

When it comes to skin care, hypochlorous acid stands out as a powerful disinfectant. When properly diluted, as seen in the trending facial sprays on TikTok, its potent antimicrobial properties claim to be able to help prevent various forms of inflammation, including acne and psoriasis. This, fans claim, results in reduced redness, fewer breakouts, and faster overall healing.

Dr Ellie Rashid, consultant dermatologist at One Welbeck shares the science behind the cleansing spray, telling PS UK: "Hypochlorous acid is a naturally occurring antimicrobial compound consisting of hydrogen, oxygen, and chlorine. It's generated by the body's immune system, particularly white blood cells, as a defence mechanism against infections. In skincare, there isn't a particularly strong evidence base for its use but it is thought to have an anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial role."

Here in the UK, you'll commonly find hypochlorous acid more commonly in optical sprays as opposed to facial sprays, which Dr Sophie Momen, consultant dermatologist at The Cadogan Clinic explains: "Ophthalmologists use hypochlorous acid to treat inflammation of the eyelids (blepharitis), as it reduces the load of bacteria on the skin. The acid is also found in cleaning products and hand sanitisers as well as skincare, but cleaning products should not be used on the skin as they contain much higher concentrations of HOCl and if used on the skin, may cause chemical burns."

If you're an avid TikTok user, you would have heard about the Tower 28 Save Our Skin Daily Rescue Facial Spray, which is one of the most popular hypochlorous acid sprays, known for its clean ingredients and charming packaging. However, if you're looking for a product with hypochlorous acid as the key ingredient, there are many options available to suit different preferences and budgets, so keep scrolling to browse the products selected by Dr Momen and Dr Rashid.
