I Tried TikTok's "Honey Lips" Trend

I love a beauty trend as much as the next person, but even as a beauty editor, I must admit I have my limits. I'm not the best at eyeshadow, so I stay away from trying to DIY looks like "angel eyes" or bold neon eyeliner. Plus, as much as I've been practicing at home, my manicures never look as good as when a professional does them, so the textured trend doesn't seem to be in the cards either. But you know what I do know really well? A good lip combination, and I have never encountered one that I haven't been able to replicate. So when I came across "honey lips," I immediately understood my assignment.

The trend really only requires two to three products: a lip liner, a sparkly gold eyeshadow, and yellow- or green-tinted gloss. Depending on your beauty philosophy, you can nix the first two and just opt for the gloss to add a hint of colour to your lips, or you can go all out and do the whole shimmery look. I'm not the biggest fan of glitter lips, so for my version, I decided to opt for just the gloss and liner. Read ahead to see how the experiment went.

Creating Honey Lips

My products of choice were the MAC Cosmetics Squirt Plumping Gloss Stick (£22) in the shade Like Squirt and one of my favourite lip pencils, CTZN Cosmetics's Lipstroke Waterproof Lip Liner (£18), in the shade Cinco. Following my usual technique, I lined my lips with the lip pencil and blended it out to give my lips a slightly poutier appearance. Then I got a small amount of the gloss stick and applied it to my lips, being careful not to use too much and make it goopy.

"Honey Lips" Result

After some additional blending, my end result was nothing short of gorgeous. The brown from the lip liner gave a delicious warm-toned tint to the look, while the colour of the gloss kept it on the more neutral side. The combination was glassy but deeply moisturising — perfect for the upcoming autumn and winter months. If you want to try this with glitter, I'd suggest a pressed formula for something more subtle (any gold-toned shade from an eyeshadow palette you already have should work), but if you want something a bit more on the editorial side, opt for loose glitter like Nyx's Face & Body Glitter
(£7) or even edible gold leaf flecks on top of the initial layer of gloss, then finish it off with another coat of clear gloss for that ultra-high-fashion feel. I love how easy this trend was to create myself, and it's one I'll definitely be keeping in my back pocket to do again.
