As 2023 comes to a close, we would be remiss not to look back on how much has changed in the beauty space. This last year created what can only be described as micro-trend mania, as everything from Barbiecore to red beauty and even indie-sleaze makeup had a moment. But 2024 seems to be on track for makeup enthusiasts to find a happy medium.
Whereas the last two years seemed to be all about bold and somewhat practical glam — think 3D embellishments and eye-catching hues paired with base makeup that will last — the next few months will place an emphasis on certain features more than others.
We've asked professional makeup artists to lay out exactly what makeup trends you can expect in 2024 to stay ahead of the curve. Be prepared to see soft eye makeup paired with intricate eyeliner, satin skin that doesn't veer too matte or dewy, and lip looks that will shake up the fairly traditional category.

2024 Makeup Trend: Graphic Eyeliner
"After a full year of monochromatic soft eyeshadow looks that have come from the latte makeup, balletcore, and strawberry-girl trends, the fairly simple looks are going to be upgraded," makeup artist Jonet Williamson tells POPSUGAR. "Intricate graphic eyeliner is going to come back with a vengeance."
In 2024, expect to see everything from siren eyes to double-winged eyeliner and even intricate shapes on the orbital area. These looks are perfect to pair with some of the more subdued makeup looks that have been trending on social media and are the perfect marriage between the "clean girl" aesthetic and more maximalist makeup styles.
2024 Makeup Trend: Natural, Matte Skin
If last year people felt either all in with their foundation or just stuck to strategically placed concealer, that will change in the new year. "We've seen the emergence of bare skin and no-foundation makeup routines, but with an emphasis on a natural glow," Williamson says. "Next year, we'll see people leaning more toward a controllable sheen on the skin versus an all-over dew."
This natural, matte skin trend means more people will opt for matte formulations like Fenty Beauty's Eaze Drop Stick (£24), but with the addition of a subtle glow in areas that the sun naturally highlights (sorry, we're not yet back to the tin-man cheeks of the mid '00s just yet). This will also likely lead to a fierce return of cream highlighters, as they are the perfect product to get this look. 2024 Makeup Trend: Glossy Lips
In 2024, bare lips with a hint of something extra will be all the rave. "Lip oils are going to have a bigger spotlight on them than ever before," Williamson says. "Expect to see sheer washes of colour paired with a neutral lip liner for more definition and shape."
Lip oils are the perfect cross between a treatment and a gloss and somehow feel like less of a hassle than both of them. 2024 Makeup Trend: Coquette Looks
Coquette makeup is a flirty, feminine aesthetic that brings us straight back to our Tumblr days. "The look aims to be powdery, flushed, and doll-like, similar to a look you'd see Cassie from 'Euphoria' sporting," Krysta Lewis, professional makeup artist and founder of Aisling Organics, previously told POPSUGAR.
Coquette eye makeup will feature soft pastels, while face makeup should include a blurring face powder and bright-pink cheeks. Lewis suggests finishing everything off with a deep-black mascara, giving you a simple, hyperfeminine look that's appealing and easy to re-create.
