The growing popularity of tweakments — i.e. subtle cosmetic procedures that don't involve major surgery — has been undeniable over the last few years. From lip filler to the use of Botox rising 28 percent since 2010 among people in the 20-29 age group, according to PlasticSurgery.org, we are undeniably in an era of embracing the power of aesthetics. Celebrities are even more open about the work they've had done.
So, it's no surprise that you can be scrolling on TikTok looking for a new beauty hack to try and somehow end up learning about an innovative procedure, like PRP undereye injections.
If you're unfamiliar, allow us to explain. We tapped board-certified dermatologist Chris Tomassian, MD to break down everything you should know about the procedure ahead. From the cost to what to expect during recovery and even what makes someone a good candidate for this type of procedure, nothing's off the table.
What Are Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections?
"Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections are used to treat dark circles, skin laxity (or wrinkles and fine lines), as well as improve the texture and tone of the skin," Dr. Tomassian tells POPSUGAR. While the technique used to administer PRP undereye injections is similar to undereye filler, the two serve completely different purposes. "Filler is a soft hyaluronic acid gel, which stays under the skin to provide volume and will draw in some water," he says. "It does not stimulate collagen or elastin production and the results from filler are also immediate."
Who's a Good Candidate For PRP Injections Under the Eyes?
The best part about PRP undereye injections is almost anyone looking for an undereye refresh is a good candidate. "PRP is a great procedure to do on younger patients who are not comfortable with filler or do not need additional volume in the area, but want to improve skin texture, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation," Dr. Tomassian says. "PRP is also better for those with very thin skin under the eye as filler has the potential to refract light which in turn can leave a blue hue if the skin is too thin or the product is injected too superficially."
In addition, if you suffer from dark circles that just won't go away no matter how much sleep you get, PRP injections can help.
PRP Undereye Injections Benefits
While the benefits of PRP injections under the eyes include a fresh, rejuvenated look, the procedure has longer-term perks, as well. "The platelet-rich plasma used in the injection is a serum that is taken from the patient's blood and spun down to obtain plasma," Dr. Tomassian says. "This plasma is filled with growth factors that stimulate collagen and elastin, enhance tissue healing, and blood flow. The PRP is then injected under the eyes."
This means that over the course of a few weeks following the the injections, the growth factors will stimulate more blood flow to the area, as well as assist in producing collagen elastin in the area. By stimulating your body's natural response, you'll require less frequent maintenance as opposed to other treatments, such as Botox. Though return times vary, Dr. Tomassian says that patients typically only need a touch-up for this treatment yearly.

Since PRP injections are a cosmetic procedure, they won't be covered by insurance and you will be paying out of pocket. "Prices will vary by provider and the location of your provider, but the average will be around $600 to $800 for the treatment," Dr. Tomassian says.
PRP Undereye Injections Risks
Though PRP injections are lauded as one of the safer undereye injections to get, no aesthetic procedure is without risk. It is incredibly rare, but as with filler — or any undereye injectable — if administered incorrectly, PRP injections can cause blindness, infection, or internal bleeding to name a few adverse effects.
The best way to mitigate these risks is to go to a certified medical provider who is familiar with the treatment. This doctor should be able to answer any and all questions you have regarding the procedure, as well as have a plan in place should anything go wrong. What to Expect When Getting PRP Undereye Injections
PRP undereye injections are a minimally invasive treatment, so there's not very much that you have to prepare for ahead of time. However, the procedure does involve drawing blood, so make sure that you're properly hydrated and have eaten prior to your appointment. Additionally, communicate with your doctor if you are afraid of needles.
The procedure itself will involve taking the blood sample and placing it into a centrifuge, which is how the platelets are separated from your blood. The resulting serum is what is injected under the eyes.

PRP undereye injections have minimal downtime but do expect some puffiness immediately following your appointment. "Swelling and bruising [are] the most common side effects," Dr. Tomassian says. "However, they will both self-resolve and patients can expect to see start seeing results in about four weeks."
