Twisted Bun Hairstyles Are Cool, Quick, and Everywhere

New York Fashion Week this season is ripe with beauty trends you're going to want to copy. From countless french manicures on the runways of LoveShackFancy, Prabal Gurung, and Tory Burch to floating crystal eyeliner at LUAR and Thom Browne and cool faux-bridge piercings at Bronx and Banco, there's something for everyone. Many of the hairstyles spotted on the runway were just as buzz-worthy, but there's one look that numerous glam squads favoured again and again: twisted buns.
Both on the runways and in the streets outside of shows, the twisted bun hairstyle came in all different shapes, sizes, and styles. Some were placed high on the top of the head; others were kept low, almost like an elevated ballet bun. A few hairstylists working backstage kept the looks very minimal and classic, while others stepped outside the box and really pushed the limits with their creations. Translation? You're bound to find one version of the style you'll want to recreate at home (if not more).
Ahead, we're rounding up some of the best twisted bun hairstyles from New York Fashion Week this year, as well as the products used to create them — so you can try one yourself.
Twisted Bun at Alice & Olivia's New York Fashion Week Show
For Alice & Olivia, hairstylist and brand founder Nick Stenson created twisted buns with a romantic feel, which were punctuated with fun hair accessories. "The inspiration for this look was whimsicalness. Combining girly, beautiful, and effortless, with lots of texture," Stenson says in a press release.
To create the look, he added beachy waves to the hair, then applied the Nick Stenson Beauty Texture Spray ($34) before twisting small sections of hair and pinning them in place.
Twisted Bun at Tia Adeola's New York Fashion Week Show
The Tia Adeola show saw a totally different style of twisted updo. Using Bread Beauty Supply products, hairstylists Mike Martinez and Sahara Siggers of Cutler Salon created half-up half-down hairstyles featuring loopy, curled buns high on the top of the model's head. They used the Bread Hair Gel (launching March 3) to add shine and create uniform ribbon curls with velcro rollers.
"This season, we're taking inspiration from the iconic '90s Atlanta style, adding extra length and flair to our models' tresses with long extensions and bold gel-sculpted curl," Martinez tells POPSUGAR in a press release.
Double Twisted Bun at Tia Adeola's New York Fashion Week Show
Another variation of the twisted bun was seen at the Tia Adeola runway show, which featured a pigtail bun hairstyle, also by Martine and Siggers.
Twisted Bun at Christian Siriano's New York Fashion Week Show
The lead hairstylist for Christian Siriano's show was Lacy Redway. For the elegant runway show, she created twisted buns to look like roses using TRESemmé products, like the TRESemmé's Extra Hold Mousse ($9).
Twisted Bun at Patbo's New York Fashion Week Show
The PatBo runway was riddled with slicked-back twisted buns. For added flare, some of the buns featured a tail that was left out and straightened. Hairstylist Jon Reyman keyed the show and used K18, Dyson, and Aveda products.
Twisted Bun at Badgley Mischka's New York Fashion Week Show
At the Badgley Mischka show, hair department lead Peter Gray created twisted buns with a retro flare thanks to a dramatic swooped bang using Intelligent Nutrients and Olivia Garden products.
Twisted Bun at Ulla Johnson's New York Fashion Week Show
Hairstylist Joey George used Oribe on the runway of Ulla Johnson to create intricate buns using multiple braided strands of hair that were then twisted up into each other. He was inspired by the bold patterns and geometric shapes in the clothing.
George started by applying the Flash Form Finishing Spray Wax ($42) to dry hair before creating multiple fishbone braids. Those braids were then pinned into place on the head to create various shapes.
Twisted Bun at Chocheng's New York Fashion Week Show
At Chocheng, hairstylist Matthew Curtis created various braided and twisted buns for the models using Olivia Garden hair tools and Hair By Sam McKnight products, including one look that saw twisted strands of hair wrapped around themselves to form a slicked-back low bun.
To create the look, Curtis pulled her back using the Olivia Garden New Cycle Smoothing Paddle Brush ($20), then twisted "individual sections of hair and wrap[ed] each twist around the base of the ponytail with bobby pins to create a soft bun."
