Alex Trebek Talks About His Cancer Battle on GMA May 2019

Watch Alex Trebek's First Interview Since His Cancer Diagnosis: "I'm Fighting Through It"

Even as he battles cancer, Alex Trebek is working to help others. After revealing that he had been diagnosed with stage-four pancreatic cancer in March, the 78-year-old Jeopardy! host sat with Good Morning America's Robin Roberts to share an update on his treatment and draw attention to pancreatic cancer, which is unfortunately often diagnosed at an advanced stage.

"It's great to be considered an inspiration to other people," Alex said. "People all over America have been sharing their good thoughts, their advice, their prayers. I feel it is making a difference in my well-being," he added. Alex has also turned to cancer survivors for inspiration: "I've had so many contacts from people who have survived cancer for 10 years, 12 years, 14 years. I am now a 30-day cancer survivor. I'm gonna catch up to those other people."

As for where his diagnosis stands, Alex said, "My oncologist tells me I am doing well, even though I don't always feel it." He went on to share that his cancer indicators are coming down and his weight, platelets, and blood count have remained steady. Alex will undergo another session of chemotherapy in the coming week, and then undergo some tests to see how he's responding to treatment.

"I'm fighting through it."

Apart from the physical effects, however, Alex said he had not expected the mental and emotional effect. "What I'm not used to dealing with is the surges that come on suddenly of deep, deep sadness. It brings tears to my eyes," he said. "I've discovered in this whole episode, ladies and gentlemen, that I'm a bit of a wuss. But I'm fighting through it." Watch the inspiring interview above.
