King Charles III's Hot Bodyguard, Dubbed "Major Eye Candy", Lands a Royal Promotion
Cast your mind back to the King's Coronation on 6 May. While it's likely you remember the grandeur of the event, Princess Charlotte's Coronation outfit, and Katy Perry randomly fumbling to find her seat in Westminster Abbey, you might also have taken a shining to a very handsome man standing behind the new King: Lieutenant Colonel Johnny Thompson.
The queen's former most senior bodyguard became the King's equerry, and initially became somewhat of an internet sensation back in September 2022, when eagle-eyed fans noticed the attractive member of the security team at the events following Queen Elizabeth's death. Since then, he's been nicknamed "Major Eye Candy". The longtime member of the royal family's security detail served in the British Army since 2006.
And it seems we aren't the only ones to have a soft spot for Thompson. Despite his plans to leave the army within the next 18 months, which would presumably take him out of the public domain, he has been promoted. Instead, the King and Queen have made him a "super equerry" meaning he will be responsible for organising the monarch's private affairs, according to The Sun. And so we are likely to see a lot more of the dashing right-hand man.
Thompson gained legions of fans following the Coronation as he stood by Prince Louis and Queen Camilla as they crowned the King during the formal ceremony at Westminster Abbey. "Must admit there were times when I was a bit distracted today," one Twitter user wrote alongside a close-up of the lieutenant, while another hilariously joked, "I would camp out on The Mall in the rain without a tent for three days for a glimpse of this man." The equerry indeed looked dapper in a ceremonial dress uniform.
In June, he was named third in Tatler's Social Power Index, where the publication described him as having "a fabulous sense of humour and looks as good in a suit as he does in a kilt". Well, we can't argue with that.
