Many have wondered if they should try to be friends with their exes, but what about their exes' ex-wives? That's what Taylor Swift has done with Sophie Turner, who split from Joe Jonas at the end of this summer. Turner and Swift became friends during the former's marriage to Jonas, but now that the pair have split (and had some major divorce drama this Autumn), Swift has stood by her friend, and they've been spotted out together multiple times.
In case you need a little refresher, Swift and Jonas dated in 2008. Their relationship ended after Jonas reportedly broke up with Swift over a 27-second phone call. After their split, Swift seemingly wrote several songs about Jonas on her "Fearless," "Speak Now," and "Red" albums. Although she and Jonas appeared to not be on speaking terms for years, that all seemingly changed once Swift became friends with Turner. Once the actor grew close with Swift, the "Cruel Summer" singer appeared to put her past with Jonas behind her.
But we also know Swift was a major fan of Turner way before they connected as friends. Back in 2019, Swift opened up to Entertainment Weekly about some of the inspirations for her 2016 album "Reputation" and it included an unexpected one: "Game of Thrones." Swift started watching the show in 2016 while working on the album. ""So much of my imagination was spent on 'Game of Thrones,'" she told the outlet. She explained that she took things that were happening to her and added a "Game of Thrones" filter for different songs, adding, "'I Did Something Bad' I wrote after Arya and Sansa conspire to kill Littlefinger." And of course, Turner played Sansa (Swift also told EW she wanted Sansa to sit on the Iron Throne). So in a way, Swift and Turner's friendship was a little preordained.

Turner and Swift's friendship seemingly began when they both appeared on "The Graham Norton Show" in May 2019. At the time, Turner was promoting her new film "Dark Phoenix," while Swift was in the midst of her "Lover" era. Despite the fact that Turner had just got married to Jonas weeks prior, she and Swift were nothing but nice toward each other on the show.
Swift later expressed her excitement over meeting Turner and the rest of the "Dark Phoenix" cast on Instagram. "Feeling pretty lucky that I got to be a guest on the same night as @sophiet, Michael Fassbender, @Jessicachastain and @Jamesmcavoyrealdeal," Swift wrote (via People), before urging her fans to go support the film. "They were all so sweet, now I want to just walk around yelling GO SEE DARK PHOENIX."

2June 2019: Sophie Turner Confirms She's "Friends" With Taylor Swift

Following their joint interview, Turner gushed over Swift while on the red carpet for the premiere of "Dark Phoenix." When asked what it was like having Swift "fangirl" over her, Turner praised the singer by calling her "a really sweet girl" in an interview with "Extra."
Turner then confirmed that she and Swift had met in person "a couple of times" and that they're friends. Although the two hang out, Turner still can't help but "fangirl" over Swift like everybody else. "I don't think Taylor Swift fangirls over me. I think I fangirl over her," she said.

3July 2020: Taylor Swift Seemingly References Sophie Turner on "Folklore"

After Swift dropped "Folklore" in July 2020, fans suspected she'd referenced Turner and Jonas in her song "Invisible String." During the track's third verse, Swift reveals she's now on good terms with one of her exes. "For the boys who broke my heart, now I send their babies presents," she sings. Considering Turner and Jonas were expecting their first child together at the time, fans naturally assumed the lyric was about them. However, Swift has never confirmed who inspired the line.

4April 2021: Sophie Turner and Taylor Swift Interact on Instagram
Following the release of "Fearless (Taylor's Version)" in April 2021, Turner supported the record on Instagram by sharing a screenshot of her listening to Swift's "Mr. Perfectly Fine." The song was one of the album's "from the vault" tracks that wasn't on Swift's original 2008 album. Since Swift and Jonas briefly dated the same year "Fearless" dropped, fans theorised that "Mr. Perfectly Fine" was about her relationship with the Disney alum.
Turner fuelled the rumours on her Instagram Story. "It's not NOT a bop," she wrote about the track. After seeing her message, Swift reposted Turner's comment on her own Story and then praised the actor, writing, "Forever bending the knee to the 👑 of the north."

5November 2021: Sophie Turner and Taylor Swift Party Together

In November 2021, Swift performed her 10-minute version of "All Too Well" on "Saturday Night Live." According to Elle, several of the star's famous friends were in the "SNL" audience to support the singer, including Turner and Jonas. Later that night, the couple were seen attending an "SNL" afterparty hosted by Swift.

6September 2023: Sophie Turner and Taylor Swift Reunite Amid Turner's Divorce

Weeks after Turner and Jonas confirmed their divorce on Instagram, the actor was photographed hanging out with Swift in New York City on a number of occasions, as seen in pictures published by Page Six and Cosmopolitan. On 30 Sept. the "Game of Thrones" star was spotted leaving Emilio's Ballato restaurant in NYC wearing a knockout red leather minidress after hanging out with Swift and Blake Lively. A day later, the trio, along with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, watched the Kansas City Chiefs take on the New York Jets as they supported Swift's rumoured new beau, American football plater Travis Kelce.

Swift and Turner got dinner together on 4 Nov. alongside friends Selena Gomez, Gigi Hadid, Cara Delevingne, and Brittany Mahomes. When photos of the group were published, fans noted that Swift, Gomez, Hadid, and Turner all had previously dated a Jonas brother.
