Is Lexi in Love With Rue on Euphoria?

We're Not Sure What to Think About Rue and Lexi's Relationship on Euphoria

The web of crushes and hookups on Euphoria is seriously tangled, and viewers have recently raised a new question: is Lexi in love with Rue? The childhood best friends have been slowly reconnecting over the series so far, and while it seems platonic on the surface, a few moments have led some fans to believe that there's more — at least on Lexi's side.

Redditors pounced on this theory in a lengthy thread after episode five, with opinions split on both sides.

"Lexi is in love with Rue. That is all I wanted to say," said the thread's OP halfjazmynn. A handful of commenters agreed with this, while others had a different read on the characters' interactions.

"I'm not against the possibility of Lexi being LGBT, but I just didn't get the vibe that this is some one sided childhood crush. Even during their kiss in the flashback, Rue seemed to enjoy it more than Lexi did," said Reddit user Spider-Tay. User darkkushy agrees: "I think the dynamic between Lexi and rue is that they're two friends who have grown apart. Seems like Lexi is happy that rue and Jules are hanging out but also sad that rue doesn't have time for her anymore."

Lexi certainly seems to be the most loyal and long-lasting friend that Rue has, even if Rue has yelled at her and claimed they're not actually friends. There's a reference in an early episode to Rue asking Lexi to give a fake urine sample for her to pass her drug test, which is a pretty big ask for someone who's just a casual friend. Now clean, Rue is trying to make amends and rekindle her friendship with Lexi, who seems positively thrilled about it. Most crucially, they shared a brief kiss in a flashback where they were both learning how to kiss, which seemed to affect Rue more than Lexi.

The biggest problem with this theory? We really don't know enough about Lexi to make an educated guess about her thoughts and feelings on . . . pretty much anything. Lexi has popped up from time to time as a support system for Rue, and she shows up when there needs to be another person in a scene, such as when she tells Jules at the roller rink that Rue's improvement is because of Jules. Beyond that, though, she's more of a plot device than a fully formed character, which makes it difficult to theorise about her secret feelings — we simply don't have enough information, and it's tough to consider someone a "love interest" character when they're barely present in the story. While it's not out of the realm of possibility that Lexi has a crush on Rue, it doesn't quite make narrative sense with what we know so far.
