Channel 4 has already kicked off Screw, a brand new six-part prison drama, with the first episode airing on 6. Jan. Created by BAFTA nominated writer Rob Williams (The Victim and Killing Eve), the series promises an uncensored and often darkly humorous look at life as a prison officer in C Wing, at an all-male prison in modern Britain. Described as bursting at the seams with humour, and full of emotional high stakes and danger for both inmates and officers, the series offers a rare insight into life behind from the perspective of the prison officers rather than those incarcerated. Filmed in Glasgow, events in the show are inspired by Williams's experience working and volunteering in prisons when he was gaining a teaching qualification in the '90s.

Although the characters and storylines have been devised purely for the show and aren't a direct translation of Williams's experiences, he told Channel 4 that he planned to convey how his time working in prisons challenged his preconceptions. He also spoke about his desire to represent that world as he saw it, stating that "there is laughter, there is humour, there is humanity, there is friendship, there is real life. It's not just violence and drudgery and darkness". The series will challenge the public view of prison; conveying the environment as something far richer than it's given credit for — with a stellar cast bringing the vision to life. Read on to meet the fantastic cast members of Screw, and where we've seen them before.

You can watch the first episode of Screw on All 4 and the remaining episodes air every Thursday at 9 p.m.
