Fans finally have a proper look at the first season of HBO's new fantasy series His Dark Materials, and it looks pretty amazing. The highly anticipated adaptation of Philip Pullman's fantasy trilogy introduces viewers to a new world of magic, fantastical beasts, and danger (which Game of Thrones fans will definitely want to get in on).
Set in an parallel universe where every human being has an animal companion known as a daemon, the first season of the series (which has already been renewed for a second) will more or less cover the events of the trilogy's first novel, The Golden Compass. Led by Logan's Dafne Keen as Lyra Belacqua, along with her daemon, Pantalaimon (voiced by Kit Connor), the series follows the young girl's adventures as she ends up at the centre of a conspiracy after thwarting an assassination attempt on her uncle Lord Asriel (James McAvoy). As Lyra becomes entangled in the dangerous schemes of the mysterious Mrs. Coulter (Ruth Wilson), she finds herself entrusted with a truth-telling device called an alethiometer and joins forces with Lin-Manuel Miranda's Lee Scoresby. He subsequently recruits a fighting polar bear to journey alongside them in the "great war to come" and rescues a band of imprisoned orphans like Lyra. (So yeah, it's going to get wild.)
The rest of the HBO and BBC joint-production cast includes Andrew Scott, Clarke Peters, Ariyon Bakare, Georgina Campbell, Helen McCrory, and Cristela Alonzo. Watch the thrilling trailer above and get ready for the adventure to begin when His Dark Materials premieres on BBC on Nov. 3.
