How The Wilds Shows What It's Like to Be a Teenager

Why Every Young Woman Will Relate to The Wilds, Even If You're Not Stranded on a Deserted Island

We've partnered with Prime Video to introduce you to The Wilds, a dark drama that sheds new light on what it means to be a teenager. Watch the first season starting 11 Dec.

Being a teenager is hard enough under normal circumstances — let alone while stranded on a deserted island. In The Wilds on Prime Video, that's the reality for teenage girls who thought they were on their way to a luxe wellness retreat when their private jet crashes.

Suddenly, all of their lives are totally disrupted. They not only have to contend with surviving their new reality, but they also have to deal with lingering emotions from their old lives. As Leah says in the first episode, being a teenage girl is the real living hell.

Though their situation may be extreme, the characters on The Wilds are dealing with feelings that every young woman has experienced. Read on to find out why this show is surprisingly relatable, then catch The Wilds on Prime Video to find out for yourself.

The Emotional Highs and Lows

The intense feelings that come with being a teenager don't just go away when you get thrown into a difficult situation — in fact, they only get more intense. Anyone who's ever dealt with that roller coaster of hormones and emotions will recognise the confusion, angst, and pain that the girls experience.

The Loneliness

Your teen years can be a lonely time. Isolated in your own thoughts, it often feels like no one else can possibly understand what you're going through. The Wilds takes that common feeling to the next level by stranding the emotional teenage characters on a mysterious, uninhabited island.

The Strong Friendships

A pageant queen, a snarky survivalist, a competitive diver — it's unlikely that many of the characters would have become best friends in real life, but after the plane crash, they're forced to come together. As odd as it is, they even find some fun, lighthearted moments on the island. The Wilds shows an extreme version of how many of us made our close friends in school: bonding over a difficult situation — it just might have been an unrequited crush or failing grade on an exam instead of a plane crash.

The High-Pressure Scenarios

When your brain is flooded with so many emotions, every situation feels high pressure. It's a common theme in The Wilds, both in the characters' lives on the island and the flashbacks from their lives before. Whether it's Rachel's diving competitions, Leah's angst over an ill-fated romance, or Shelby's struggle to simply find clean water on the island, you can feel the pressure each character is under.
