Hawaii: Kaui Hart Hemmings Kaui Hart Hemmings grew up on Oahu and her adoptive father is world-famous surfer and politician Fred Hemmings Jr., a relationship she wrote about in a 2008 Guardian article. Her debut novel, The Descendants, is also set in Hawaii and was adapted into a movie starring George Clooney.
