When a middle-class teacher (played by Meg Ryan) witnesses a sexual assault that she believes to be connected to a murder that occurs a few days later, she meets with a sexual aggressive homicide detective (Mark Ruffalo), whom she finds both thrilling and frightening, and she begins a steamy affair with him despite her growing distrust of men.
