Born in Virginia, Mendes moved 16 times, mainly in Florida, within the first decade of her life. "At first [we moved because of] my dad's job," she told BuzzFeed. "He just kept getting promoted and transferred, and then it was because my parents divorced and my mom couldn't decide where she wanted to live, ever. So my sister and I got swept into the whirlwind of her life."
