Donna Tartt's thriller The Secret History from the 1990s features young adults, and though it's a dark story not having to do with romance at all, it still tackles what young 20-somethings with with as far as friendship, insecurity, and betrayal. Tartt's compelling writing will feel familiar to Rooney's way with words.
