If you haven't done a deep dive into the X-Men movies yet, don't worry, they're not quite as extensive as the Avengers franchise. All you have to know is that Wolverine, Professor X, Mystique, and other mutants have to travel back in time from the future to stop the development of a technology that threatens the mutants' existence. Even though it seems like your run-of-the-mill superhero story on the surface, the film has a really profound message about prejudice and discriminating against people who don't fit the norm.
