The Mandalorian: Did You Catch This Fun Cameo in the Season 2 Premiere?

The Mandalorian's second season gets off to a roaring start with a season premiere packed full of plot twists and new characters, including Gor Koresh. The one-eyed alien mobster only gets a few minutes of screen time, but if you feel like you recognise the voice behind the CGI, there's a good reason for that!

John Leguizamo lends his voice to the greedy mobster who's after the Mandalorian's armor (and the high price it could fetch on the black market). It's not the first time that The Mandalorian has hosted an unexpected celebrity cameo, either. Back in the fifth episode of season one, when the show visits the famous cantina on Tatooine that we know from the original Star Wars trilogy, there's a droid bartender who gets a moment in focus. The behind-the-scenes Disney+ documentary Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian revealed that he's actually voiced by Mark Hamill, aka Luke Skywalker himself.

Of course, the Star Wars universe as a whole has always been a place where celebs pop up for fun cameos — where else can you keep a low profile by hiding behind an alien CGI creation or a suit of stormtrooper armor? Daniel Craig famously took a break from being James Bond to film a brief cameo as a stormtrooper in 2015's The Force Awakens. Stormtroopers are apparently a popular way to pull off secret cameos: The Hollywood Reporter revealed in 2017 that Princes William and Harry hopped into stormtrooper armor for a cameo when they visited the set of The Last Jedi in 2016. The scene was cut from the finished film, according to the Daily Mail, reportedly because the princes were both too tall for the typically uniform-height stormtroopers, but the scene was revealed as part of the bonus features on the DVD release.

Leguizamo is a newcomer to the Star Wars universe, but he's definitely not new to voice work. You'll recognise his voice from playing Sid the Sloth in the Ice Age series. He's collaborated with some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Baz Luhrmann twice (as Tybalt in Romeo + Juliet and as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in Moulin Rouge). In 2014, he filmed the movie Chef with Jon Favreau, who later went on to become the showrunner of The Mandalorian — and, incidentally, who directs the season two premiere in which Leguizamo appears! Keeping an eye out for famous cameos is a time-honoured tradition in the Star Wars universe, and we're definitely intrigued to see who else might show up throughout the new season!
