9 Surprising Fashion Trends That Everyone Will Be Wearing This Autumn

Scarf prints were major during fashion month. We've watched them bubble up for the past two seasons but they were especially big this time around in London and New York. Everything from silk scarves to bandana prints were mixed and matched for a relaxed bohemian look or an edgy urban vibe. Burberry, Preen, and Christopher Kane did this print exceptionally well for the Spring 2020 season.

We loved to see so many people wrapping the straps of their heeled sandals around the cuffs of their trousers. Such a smart styling tip. Cinched trousers are definitely the new cuffed jeans — you heard it here first.

Boudoir-inspired styling was also spotted everywhere. Sleepwear worn as daywear has been gaining momentum since Summer 2019, but now we're seeing lacy, sexy nightwear worn on its own, styled with chunky trainers or peeking out as delicate details layered under dresses. For the Spring/Summer 2020 season, these looks were seen at Alexander Wang, Burberry, and Gucci.

The mismatched shoes trend was one that really surprised us. Two-tone looks almost took off last season, but for Autumn 2019, wearing two different coloured shoes was a huge mood on the streets. On the runway, the style extended to pants at Sally LaPointe, Cynthia Rowley, and Dries Van Noten.

A full tailored suit, especially in bright colours, was a favourite look across all cities, but particularly in New York and Milan. A relaxed suit in a vivid colour is a great wardrobe essential that you can wear for tons of occasions. It's the type of investment piece that you can wear to a wedding, an interview, work, or school, and always look like a million bucks with minimal effort.

There were a lot of Pretty Woman-inspired cutout dresses being worn in Milan and New York, which made us think of Bella Hadid's "hip cutouts" from her jewel-dripping Met Gala look. At fashion week, we loved the cutout designs from Charlotte Knowles, Alexander MCQueen, and David Koma for the Spring 2020 show season.

Warm tones of terracotta definitely make up the official colour palette of Autumn 2019. Pantone's colour of the year, the vibrant pinkish-orange "Living Coral," gets a chilly season update with a more earthy, muted approach.

The prairie aesthetic is hand-down the most ubiquitous dress and sleeve silhouette of the past two years, and it's only getting stronger this Fall. While they go by "balloon sleeves" for most of us, there are actually three types of sleeves that we've been loving this year. The longer sleeve with a balloon-shaped centre and tapered wrist is called a bishop sleeve (as featured in the photo above), while a bishop sleeve with wider tapering at the wrist is called a cuff. Sleeves that are more voluminous at the shoulders are called a leg of mutton, or simply a mutton sleeve. And the shorter, cute sleeves are called puff sleeves.

Move over, mini bags, because oversize clutches are here to stay, especially Bottega Veneta's pouch that was all over the Fashion Week streets. It's a great piece that can hold all your bits while adding softness to an edgy look. It's also in sync with the much-loved billowing, voluminous silhouette that the prairie aesthetic has pioneered.
