After I watched Selena Gomez's music video for her song "Boyfriend," one of three new tracks she released in the deluxe edition of Rare, I started to think about the sexy date-night dresses hanging in my own closet. I mean, how could I not? It's true, I forgot they were there as I've been sheltering in place for the past four weeks with nowhere to go, my closet doors closed almost all the time. But Selena reintroduced me to the idea of slinky little numbers — including the pink sequinned Cushnie halter mini that she Instagrammed to tease the video.
Many of Selena's eagle-eyed fans are making comparisons between the "Boyfriend" video and The Weeknd's "Heartless" video, even connecting the red wool trench jacket Selena wears at the beginning of the video — styled with a printed silk headscarf — to The Weeknd's Vegas casino blazer. An editor at Seventeen even suggested that the necklace Selena teams up with her Cushnie look is a snake, a symbolic connection to her dedicated friendship with Taylor Swift in the wake of Taylor's Kardashian feud.
Even if these little fashion details were purposeful — and it is a possibility, given how many close-ups there are on Selena's jewellery — it's safe to say Selena really impressed us with her confidence in flaunting such striking silhouettes, from plunging necklines to a sheer mesh bodysuit.
